Is the United States really the land of the free? October 23, 2009

The United States claims that they are the home of the free but in reality, we are not entirely free. I am not saying we should have ultimate freedom and I do agree there should be limitations on what we can and cannot do. The issue I have is we are told what we can and cannot do.
I feel that there should not be a drinking age and if people want to do drugs then so be it. I am not saying go back to your dorm or house and drink a 40 and smoke a blunt but if you are the type of person who does this why is it not allowed. People are capable of making decisions and if it comes to doing drugs or if you are under 21 why are we not allowed to drink.
In other countries, they teach their children to respect alcohol but in this country, we are taught to fear it. What I mean is in the European countries they are told to not abuse it but here we are told that when you drink you could die. I feel that if the drinking age was lowered I feel like college kids would get tired of drinking and they slowly would stop binge drinking and drink casually. In addition, I think marijuana should be legalized because of the fact that it is used as a medicated drug but if you do not have a prescription then you could potentially get in trouble. That is kind of contradicting itself because the government allows some people to smoke but not all, which is not right.
Once again I am NOT saying to smoke and drink because there are health issues from them but the US has a bogus way of allowing them to some and not all which makes me feel like we are not free but restricted.
I responded to your post for my English Comp class.
